How to transfer from Godaddy

This tutorial covers how to transfer domains from Godaddy to your NameSilo account. This article is specific to transferring from Godaddy. You can find more details concerning domain transfers via these links:

Transferring domains requires a few different steps. Some of them are required for all transfers and some may or may not apply to you. This article covers both.

Unlock domain

• Log in to your Godaddy account and click the "Manage" button in the "Domains" box:
  
  



• Check the box(es) next to the domain(s) you would like to transfer and then click the "Lock" icon:
  
  



• Select "Off" and then press the "Save" button:

Retrieve EPP Transfer Code

• Click on the Domain Name (do not check the box as indicated above to unlock the domain - click on the actual domain name written in blue):
  
  



• Click the "Email my code" link next to "Authorization Code" at the bottom of the page:
  
  



• Click the "Send" button: (Note that the email address being used may not be your email address. If the email address shown is not an address you can check, please go to the "Update administrative contact email address" section. If the email address shown is [email protected], that means your domain is private. If this is the case, you will need to remove WHOIS privacy to transfer your domain(s).)

Remove Privacy

• Unfortunately, Godaddy does not allow domains using their privacy service (also known as Domains By Proxy) to transfer. This concerns some people since it means their contact information will be visible in WHOIS. However, as Godaddy allows expediting transfers, this means your information would only be public for about 15-30 minutes which is VERY likely not enough time for it to be harvested by spammers.
• Steps to remove privacy:
  
  
  • Go to the Domains By Proxy web site at http://www.domainsbyproxy.com
  
  
  • Log in with your Domains By Proxy log in information. (This is different than your Godaddy account. If you do not know your customer number/log in name and password, they would have sent it to you upon adding privacy from "Domains By Proxy" using email "[email protected]".)
    
    
  • Check the box(es) next to the domain(s) you want to transfer and then click the remove icon as displayed below:
    
    
  
  
  • Confirm that you want to remove privacy:
    
    
  
  
  • You can now log out of Domains By Proxy.

Update administrative contact email address

• Per ICANN rules, we are required to notify the email address found for the Administrative contact in WHOIS for all domain transfers. If the email address used by the Administrative contact is not an address you can check, you will need to update it within your Godaddy account. You can find/update the Administrative contact email address following these instructions:
• Click on the Domain Name (do not check the box as indicated above to unlock the domain - click on the actual domain name written in blue):
  
  



• Click the "Contacts" tab:
  
  



• You will find the Administrative contact email address in the "Administrator" section. If the email address shows [email protected] then you need to remove privacy. If an email address shows that you do not have access to, you can update the Administrative contact email address by clicking the "Edit Administrator" link as shown above.


• VERY IMPORTANT... DO NOT modify the Registrant information. Doing so results in Godaddy's system blocking transfers for 60 days.

Expediting transfers

• Once you confirm the email our system sends to the Administrative contact email address, we will submit the transfer(s) to the registry within 15 minutes. Our system and Godaddy's system will notify you when this occurs. Once this is done, you can log in to your Godaddy account and accept the transfer(s). Doing so negates the need to wait the standard 5-6 days when transferring domains. Once you accept the transfer(s) as instructed below, they will complete within 15 minutes. Here are the steps:
• Click "DOMAINS" from the top of the page and select the "Transfers" option:
  
  



• Click on "PENDING TRANSFERS OUT":
  
  



• Check the box(es) next to the domain(s) to accept and then click the "Accept/Decline" icon:
  
  



• In the resulting popup window, select "Accept transfer" and then press OK:
  
  


• That's it! Your transfer(s) will now complete within 15 minutes!
