Why we do not offer SSL/TLS certificates

We frequently get asked if we offer SSL/TLS certificates; as you can tell from the title, the answer is no. Most registrars that do sell SSL/TLS certificates are simply reselling them from a different certificate authority and pocketing a middleman fee - we have chosen not to do this either. Sure, we could make some money by selling SSL/TLS certificates, but we would rather just save you money and inform you about options you may not be aware of that offer you secure SSL/TLS for free (that's correct - no need to pay registration or annual certificate renewal fees!):

  • LetsEncrypt
LetsEncrypt gives out free SSL/TLS certificates -the real deal - completely free. So how do you get them? If you are technically inclined, its pretty coolhow it works. If you are not technically inclined, you will need to utilize a hosting provider that integrates with LetsEncrypt. They may make no indication that LetsEncrypt is offering the SSL/TLS, it may just be marketed as "Free SSL".
  • CloudFlare
If all you need to encrypt is web traffic,Cloudflare offers free SSL with their reverse proxy service (also free) with free DNS thrown in. The only major downside to Cloudflare's free universal SSL solution is that it requiresweb browsers support SNI, but since virtually all modern browsers support SNI (Internet Explorer on the older Windows XP being the notable exception), it's really not much of a downside in our opinion.
